If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign.

    Window curtain air bags 1 Window curtain air bag When deployed, the window curtain air bags 1 are designed to provide increased protection for the head (but not the chest or arms) of the occupants on the side of the vehicle on which the impact occurs. The window curtain air bags fill up the area indicated by the arrows.

  • Page 44 When the OCS senses that the front passen- ger seat occupant is classified as an adult or someone larger than a small individual, the 5/indicator lamp will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds when the engine is started and then go out, indicating that the front passenger front air bag is activated.
  • Page 45 Safety and Security Occupant safety If you must install a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat because circumstances require you to do so, make sure the 5/ indica- tor lamp is illuminated, indicating that the front passenger front air bag is deac- tivated.

Never place anything between seat cushion and child seat (e.g. pillow), since it reduces the effectiveness of the Occupant Classifi- cation System. The bottom of the child seat must make full contact with the passenger seat cushion.
  • Page 48 Only use seat belts which have been approved by Mercedes-Benz. Do not make any modifications to the seat belts. This can lead to unintended activation of the ETDs or to failure.

Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm, against your neck or off your shoul- der. In a frontal crash, your body would move too far forward.
  • Page 50 ETDs do not pull occupants back toward the backrest. Warning! A pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Device (ETD) that was activated must be replaced. When disposing of the pyrotechnic Emer- gency Tensioning Device (ETD), our safety instructions must be followed. These are available at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Warning! Only use seat or head restraint covers which have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle model.     Children in the vehicle If an infant or child is traveling with you in the vehicle: Secure the child using an infant or child restraint appropriate to the age and size of the child. Make sure the infant or child is properly secured at all times while the vehicle is in motion.

    Controls in detail Locking and unlocking SmartKey Your vehicle comes supplied with two SmartKeys, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The SmartKey provides an extended oper- ating range. To prevent theft, however, it is advisable to only unlock the vehicle when you are in close proximity to it.
