The air bag is designed to ac tiv a te
only in severe frontal im pacts within
th e shaded area shown in th e illus­
tratio n on p ag e 38. Only during
th ese types of im p acts will it p ro ­
vide its su p plem en tal pro tectio n.
The driver should alw ays w ea r the
s e at b elt, o therw ise it is not possi­
ble for th e air bag to provide its
intended p ro tectio n.
In case s o f less severe fro n ta l
im p acts, ro ll-o ve rs , sid e o r rear c o lli­
sio n s, o r o th e r a c c id e n ts w ith o u t s e ­
vere fro n ta l fo rc e s , the air bag w ill not
be activa ted. The d riv e r and o th e r
p a s s e n g e rs w ill the n be p ro te c te d by
th e fa ste n e d seat b e lts.
The a ctiva tio n o f th e " S R S " te m p o ra ­
rily releases a sm all a m o u n t o f d u s t
fro m the d rive r a ir bag and the seat
b e lt e m e rg e n cy te n s io n in g re tra c to rs .
T his d u st, ho w e ver, is n e ith e r in ju ­
rio u s to y o u r health, n o r d o e s it in d i­
ca te a fire in th e vehicle.

The service life of th e air bag
exten ds to th e d a te ind icated on the
label lo c ate d on th e driver-sid e door
latch post. To provide continued
reliability a fte r th at d a te , it should
be inspected by an au thorized

D am aged belts or b elts th at
w ere highly stressed in an ac ci­
dent m ust be replaced and their
anchoring points m ust also be
checked. Use only b elts installed
o r supplied by M ER C E D ES -
BENZ.
• Do not pass b elts over sharp
edges.
• Do not m ake any m odification
th at could change the e ffe ctive­
ness of th e belts.
• An air bag or em ergency ten sio n ­
ing re tra c to r (ETR) th at w as a c ti­
vated m ust be replaced.
• No m odifications of any kind may
be m ade to any co m p o nents or
wiring of th e " S R S " . This
includes th e installatio n of ad d i­
tional trim m aterial, badges, etc.
over th e steerin g w heel hub and
installation of ad d itio nal e le c tri­
c a l/e le c tro n ic eq u ip m ent on or
near " S R S " co m p o nents and w ir­
ing.
