Charging batteries

i
The charge voltage will remain switched off at re-
verse polarity and a short circuit of the terminals.
i
During the charging process the battery does not
have to be separated from the vehicle's electrical
system.
!
In order to avoid any excessive build up of gas, you
should only conduct the charging process with the
switch set to „hot battery" at ambient temperatures
> 15 °C and for older batteries. If charging is con-
ducted with the switch set to „cold battery" how-
ever, the charging process must be stopped immedi-
ately the battery is fully charged..
Adhere to the following procedure when charging batteries:
1. Switch the battery charger off (Fig. 2, Pos. 9).
2. Unscrew the cell plugs on standard batteries before
starting the charging process.
3. Connect the crocodile clip-on terminals to the prop-
er battery terminals (Fig. 1, Pos. 1). The red-colored
clip goes to the positive terminal (+) and the black
one to the negative terminal (–).
4. Set the two-way switch for „cold and hot batteries"
to the correct position (Fig. 2, Pos. 6). Note that only
the battery temperature is to be evaluated.
5. Turn the potentiometer for setting the battery
charging current (Fig. 2, Pos. 8) to the left-hand
maximum limit (lowest charging current).
6. Set the two-way switch (Fig. 2, Pos. 5) to the speci-
fied battery nominal voltage for the battery to be
charged.
7. Switch the battery charger on. After this the red LED
must light continuously (Fig. 2, Pos. 2).
8. Use the potentiometer to set the battery charging
current to the required value.
!
When setting the battery charging current make sure
that the manufacturer's specifications are adhered to.

9. Monitor the charging current on the display (Fig. 2,
Pos. 1). When in operation the yellow LED lights up
(Fig. 2, Pos. 4).
i
If the green LED (Fig. 2, Pos. 3) lights up, the battery
voltage is 2.3 V per cell or 2.4 V per cell (depending
upon the battery temperature setting). If the bat-
tery is in perfect working order this means that the
battery is charged to approx. 60 % and is ready for
starting.
!
Batteries have to be tested before performing any
trickle charge process. Only fully intact batteries
should continue to be charged or trickle charged.
Set the battery temperature two-way switch to "hot
battery" for battery continuous charge, trickle charge
or floating-mode operation.
10. The battery is fully charged, when the green LED
lights and when the battery charging current dis-
play indicates that only a small charging current is
being registered. When the charging process is over
switch off the battery charger.
11. Disconnect the crocodile clips from the battery
(remove the black negative one first).
