the
When the spectrum analyzer is used in linear mode, video ltering
provides the average value of a signal. After the signal has been
maximized and the peak value has been measured, an average
measurement may be made.
Video (post-detection) ltering provides averaging of higher frequency
components (such as noise) at the output of the envelope detector.
When the video lter bandwidth is narrower than the resolution
bandwidth lter, averaging occurs. Narrowband (for example,
continuous-wave) signal amplitudes are not a ected by video ltering.
For the true average, the video bandwidth must be less than the
lowest pulse repetition frequency, the sweep must be slow enough to
let the lters charge completely, and the spectrum analyzer must be in
the linear amplitude display mode.
