MS-DOS AND YOUR PRINTER
When using yourprinter
with anIBM PC,PC-XT,orPC-AT orcompatible,
you will probably b eusing PC-DOS orMS-DOS asanoperating system. A
numberofsoftware tricks maybe useful h ere. T hischapter is not, h owever,
a substitute
for theoperating system manuals supplied withyourcomputer.
To learn how to print fdes, etc. it is best to read the relevantparts of these
manuals.
INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARE WITH
YOUR PRINTER
When installing
application
software,
you may find that yourprinter is not
specifically
mentioned inthelists ofprinters
givenforinstallation.
How-
ever, this shouldpose no problem. Read this section, and guidelines
provided w ithyoursoftware on printer installation.
If youhaveyourprintersetup in standardmode,thenchoosean EpsonLQ-
860 as your printerto be selected.
Ifthisisnotmentioned, c hooseoneof thefollowing(inorderof preference):
Star XB24-10Color,Star LC24-10,EpsonLQ-850.
If you have your printer setup with the EDS switchesto emulatean IBM
ProprinterX24E,simplychoosethisfromthelist ofprintersavailablein the
applicationsoftwarelist.
If the IBM ProprinterX24Eis not mentioned,selectthe Propnnter X24.
Ifyoursoftwarepackagedoesnotmentionprintersbyname,butasksinstead
what featuresyour printer is capableof, the most commonquestionsare:
"Can your printerperforma backspace?"and "Can it do a hardwareform
feed?".You shouldanswer"Yes"to both these questions.
Othersoftwarepackagesmay allowyouto installspecificfeatures.Spread-
sheetprogramswill often ask for the maximumnumberof columnsto be
printed.This is givenbelow.
