5.1

PROFINET modules

You can find basic information about configuring PROFINET IO devices in the information
system of STEP 7 (TIA Portal).
In the configuration, PROFINET IO devices are installed in slots and sub-slots that are
defined via modules and submodules.
The communication interface between PROFINET IO device modules and submodules is
defined by the GSDML file. PROFINET generally supports the following IO mechanisms for
data communication:
PN communication type
cyclic
cyclic
recordData
readRec
writeRec
The direction is always seen from the perspective of the controller.

Description
Cyclic process image "Input" (PII). Data is sent from the
IO device to the controller in each PN RT cycle.
Cyclic process image "Output" (PIQ). Data is sent from
the controller to the IO device in each PN RT cycle.
Start configuration parameters of a device The
parameter can be pre-defined using default values in the
GSDML file or set using HW Config in the TIA Portal.
This parameter is only transmitted while PROFINET
communication is being established.
The addressing of "record data" is defined by the lower
slot ID in the engineering program and the
"RecordDataItem index" in the GSDML file.
Communication is based on acyclic PROFINET
read/write services.
Acyclic PROFINET read services are generally used to
read configuration and status data of modules and sub-
modules of a device during operation.
The addressing of "read record" is defined by the lower
slot ID in the engineering program and the index which is
determined by the PROFINET IO device.
Communication is based on acyclic PROFINET
read/write services.
Acyclic PROFINET write services are used to write con-
figuration data of modules and submodules of a device
during operation.
The addressing of "write record" is defined by the lower
slot ID in the engineering program and the index which is
determined by the PROFINET IO device.
Communication is based on acyclic PROFINET
read/write services.
