If foreign matter can not be removed from the low-pass fi lter using the Clean image sensor option,
the fi lter can be cleaned manually as described below. Note, however, that the fi lter is extremely del-
icate and easily damaged. Nikon recommends that the fi lter be cleaned only by Nikon-authorized
service personnel.
1
Charge the battery or connect an AC adapter.
A reliable power source is required when inspecting or cleaning the low-pass fi lter. Turn the
camera off and insert a fully-charged battery or connect an optional power connector and AC
adapter (page 6).
2
Remove the lens.
Turn the camera off and remove the lens.
3
Select Lock mirror up for cleaning.
Turn the camera on and press the
G button to display the menus.
Highlight Lock mirror up for clean-
ing in the setup menu and press 2
(note that this option is not avail-
able at battery levels of J or be-
low).
4
Select Start.
Press J.
The message shown at right will be displayed in the monitor and a row of
dashes will appear in the viewfi nder and control panel (D800/D800E) or
top control panel (D4). To restore normal operation without inspecting
the low-pass fi lter, turn the camera off .
