COOLING SYSTEM
SERV I CE PROCEDU RES

COOLANT LEVEL CHECK

Th e coola n t level is ch ecked a n d a dju st ed a t t h e
pr essu r ized coola n t t a n k (F ig. 13). Th e t a n k is
loca t ed a t t h e r igh t -r ea r side of t h e en gin e com pa r t -
m en t a n d is m ou n t ed a s t h e h igh est poin t of t h e cool-
in g syst em . Th is will a llow a n y a ir or va por
exceedin g t h e pr essu r e/ven t ca p r a t in g t o esca pe
t h r ou gh t h e ca p. Th e coola n t t a n k is equ ipped wit h a
t h r ea ded-on pr essu r e/ven t ca p. Refer t o P r essu r e/
Ven t Ca p for a ddit ion a l in for m a t ion .
A coola n t r eser ve/over flow syst em wit h a sepa r a t e
t a n k is n ot u sed wit h t h e 2.5L diesel en gin e.

(1) Add coola n t in t o t h e coola n t t a n k u p t o t h e
COLD m a r k. If p o s s ible , o n ly a d d c o o la n t w h e n
th e e n g in e is c o ld . Co o la n t le v e l in a w a rm
e n g in e w ill be h ig h e r in th e ta n k d u e to th e r-
m a l e x p a n s io n .
(2) Aft er t h e en gin e h a s been oper a t ed t h r ou gh a
few h ea t -u p a n d cool-down cycles, r ech eck t h e coola n t
level in t h e t a n k.

DRAINING COOLING SYSTEM

Th e coolin g syst em is equ ipped wit h a pr essu r ized
coola n t t a n k u sin g a pr essu r e/ven t ca p.
WARNING: DO
NOT
BLOCK DRAIN-PLUG, THE COOLANT TANK CAP,
THE RADIATOR FILL VENT VALVE, OR LOOSEN
THE RADIATOR DRAINCOCK WITH THE SYSTEM
HOT AND PRESSURIZED. SERIOUS BURNS FROM
THE COOLANT CAN OCCUR.
WARNING: IF VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUN RECENTLY,
WAIT AT LEAST 15 MINUTES BEFORE REMOVING
COOLANT TANK CAP. WITH A RAG, SQUEEZE THE
UPPER RADIATOR HOSE TO CHECK IF SYSTEM IS
REMOVE
THE
CYLINDER
UNDER PRESSURE. PLACE A RAG OVER THE CAP.
VERY SLOWLY ROTATE THE CAP COUNTER-
CLOCKWISE ALLOWING PRESSURE TO SLOWLY
RELEASE. AFTER ALL PRESSURE HAS BEEN
RELEASED, REMOVE THE COOLANT TANK CAP
COMPLETELY.

(1) Obser ve t h e pr eviou s WARN IN GS a n d r em ove
t h e coola n t t a n k pr essu r e/ven t ca p.
(2) Th e pla st ic r a dia t or dr a in cock is loca t ed on t h e
bot t om of t h e left r a dia t or t a n k . It ca n be a ccessed
fr om t h e bot t om of veh icle.
(a ) At t a ch on e en d of a 24 in ch lon g X 1/4 in ch
ID dr a in -h ose t o t h e n ipple below t h e r a dia t or
dr a in cock.
(b) P u t t h e ot h er en d of dr a in -h ose in t o a clea n
con t a in er.
(c) Open

REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

Th e coolin g syst em is equ ipped wit h a pr essu r ized
coola n t t a n k u sin g a pr essu r e/ven t ca p. Refillin g of
t h e syst em is don e t h r ou gh t h is t a n k.
NOTE:
The radiator draincock is equipped with a
rubber o-ring. Do not over tighten draincock.

(3) Wit h t h e fill ven t va lve r em oved, pr oceed t o fill
t h e syst em u sin g a 50/50 m ixt u r e of wa t er a n d a n t i-
fr eeze a s descr ibed in t h e Coola n t sect ion of t h is
gr ou p.
(4) Con t in u e t o fill t h e coolin g syst em u n t il coola n t
is obser ved esca pin g fr om t h e fill ven t open in g. Wh en
t h is occu r s, in st a ll t h e fill ven t va lve. Th e p la s tic
fill v e n t v a lv e is e qu ip p e d w ith a ru bbe r o -
rin g . D o n o t o v e r tig h te n th e fill v e n t v a lv e .
(5) Con t in u e t o fill t h e syst em u n t il t h e coola n t
