The lubricant is retained in the
stee ns knuckle housings by felt
oil seals mounted in twin retaine.s
attached to th€ inn€! face of the
housing, figure 26, No. 14. These
seals also prevent
dirt
and gril
entering the housings. Inspect the
seals regularly and .eplace th€m
promptly if damaged.
Should the vehicle be stored for
any
length
of
time,
coat

to prevent rusting.

The rear axle is the semi floating
type, figui€ 29. End Roat of the
axle shafts is adjust€d by shims
placed between the brake backing
plate and the axle flange. S€e figure
2 9, No .38 .
To remove a shaft for reshim-
ming or r€placement, 6rst remove
the hub cap, the cotte. pio and the
shaft nut. Use a wheel pulle. to
remove the whe€l hub. Remove the
bolts holding the brake dust shield,
the grease and bearing retainer
and the brake assembly. Also re

move the shield and retainer. Pull
out the shaft, using care not to lose
the bearing adjustins shihs. Should
the end of a b.oken shaft be inside
the axle housing tube, the broken
eod can usually
be removed
by
making a loop in a piece of wire and
working the loop over the eDd of
the shaft, usins the wi.e to pull it
from the housing. WheD the shaft
is.eplaced, adjust the bearing with
the shims to allow proper end play

Whenever a vehicle with Powr'
Lok
ditrerential has one wheel
jacked up, Do NOT START THE
in gear, and the engine is started,
the power will be transmitted by
the Pow.'Lok
unit
to the rear
wheel still
on the ground and
drive the vehicle otr the jack.
The sprinss should be p€.iodical-
ly examined for broken o. shifted
leaves, loose or missing rebound
clips, ansle of the spring shackles
and the position of the springs on
the
axle saddles. Springs with
shifted leaves do not have tt\eir
trormal strength. Missing rebound
clips may permit the leaves to fan
out o. break on rebound. Broken
leaves may make th€ vehicle ha.d
to handle or permit the axle to
shift out of liDe. Keep the sp ne
attaching bolts tight.
