Compared to the linear application in

3-2), the folded-ring provides extra reliability by protecting the NE chain by

building a ring. Within the chain NEs can flexibly be added or removed while the

protection within the ring remains untouched. However, note that 1 + 1 MSP protection

is only available for STM-1 transmission.
