Safety precautions This DECT cordless telephone is designed for transmitting voice calls over the analogue telephone network. Any other use whatsoever is not permitted and is regarded as in violation of the provisions. The user manual with safety precautions is a part of the product package and must be passed on to the new owner on reselling.
Contents Your Avena 127/137 is designed for connection to the analogue telephone network. This telephone is available either with one handset (Avena 127/137) or as a set with two or three handsets and their charging bays (Avena 127/137 Duo or Trio). The Avena 137 offers the additional feature of an integrated digital answer machine.

Setting up the telephone Location To obtain the best possible range, we recommend positioning the telephone in a location central to your sphere of activity. Avoid positioning the telephone in niches, recesses and behind steel doors. The maximum range between the base station and handset is approximately 40 meters indoors and 250 meters outdoors.
Setting up the telephone Setting up the base station or charging bay Do not expose the base station or charging bay to direct sunlight. Protect the base station or charging bay against moisture. Do not position the base station or charging bay in rooms exposed to condensation, corrosive steam or excessive dust.
Setting up the telephone Connecting the phone Before you can start using your telephone you must plug in the telephone connector cable and the mains cable. Safety note Use only the mains unit supplied for the base station or charging bay. Setting up the telephone To disconnect the telephone first unplug the mains unit from the 230 V mains socket and then disconnect the telephone line cable from the wall connector. To remove the connection cables press the cable grips (e.g. with a ballpoint pen or similar object) towards the connector and simultaneously pull out the plug along with the cable.
Setting up the telephone Inserting the batteries in the handset Your handsets will be ready for operation (for making or accepting calls) only once the batteries have been fully charged for the first time. Battery compartment The bottom part of the handset contains a battery compartment for housing two rechargeable NiMH batteries of type AAA.
Setting up the telephone Charging the batteries The batteries are not yet charged when you first unpack the telephone. Insert the hand- set in the base station or charging bay for charging. The flashing battery symbol on the handset shows the charging status. The batteries will take around 18 hours to fully charge. Setting up the telephone Note • Make sure to insert batteries in the handset before placing the handset in the base station/charging bay. • You can replace the handset in the base station/charging bay after every call. Charging is electronically controlled to ensure optimal charging of batteries in different charge states.
Display and keypad Display and symbols The handset display provides easy-to-understand information on the current status of your telephone. The meaning of the symbols shown in the upper part of the display is as follows: Arrows up/down: For scrolling in the menu. This antenna symbol is permanently lit if a radio connection between handset and base station exists.

Display and keypad Base station The base station Avena 127/137 is equipped with a paging key used for relocating misplaced handset(s). Charging cradle for the handset Paging key Avena 127/137 Group call (paging) You can easily relocate a misplaced handset by pressing the paging key on the base station. All handsets which are logged on to this base station will start ringing and Paging is displayed.
Making the first call Handset status at delivery After placing the handset in the base station/charging bay and completing the initial charging of the batteries, the handset is automatically switched on and ready for operation. The handset is already logged on to the original base station. The symbol is displayed.
Making the first call Making a external call Press , wait for the dialling tone and dial the number. Call preparation First, enter the number. If you enter an incorrect number, you can delete the entry. Press to call this number. Ending a call Press or replace the handset in the base station/charging bay.
Making the first call Handsfree calling The Avena 127/137 handset is equipped with a loudspeaker which enables handsfree calling. Press the loudspeaker key on the handset to activate/deactivate the loudspeaker. The loudspeaker key is illuminated when the loudspeaker is activated. Changing the voice volume during a call During a call you can independently adjust both the earpiece and loudspeaker voice volumes in five levels.
Phonebook / VIP phonebook The handset of your Avena 127/137 Duo stores up to 50 entries in the phonebook. For each entry you can specify the telephone number (max. 20 digits) and the correspon- ding name (max. 12 characters). Dialling using the phonebook Instead of remembering a telephone number, you can look up a name in the phonebook and dial the corresponding telephone number with a single key press.

Scroll to the relevant entry using the navigation keys. Press the talk key. The selected telephone number is dialled. Note This VIP phonebook is stored in the base station and thus available to all handsets which are logged on to the base station.

Comfort dialling Dialling using the redial list The redial list contains the last 10 numbers dialled. If the list is full, the oldest entry is overwritten by the most recent entry. Comfort dialling Dialling using the calls log If the CLIP service is supported by your service provider then any unanswered calls will be stored in the calls log. This calls log contains up to 20 entries. If the calls log is full, the oldest entry is overwritten by the most recent entry.

Internal calls If you have more than one handset logged on to the base station, you can make internal calls free of charge between these handsets.
Comfort dialling Callback if busy Many service providers offer the supplementary service of callback if busy (CCBS). When the person whom you are calling is engaged in another conversation (you will hear the busy tone), then you may activate this service. The telephone network monitors now the line of the person you are trying to call.
Comfort dialling Call anonymously Your telephone number may be made available to the other party when you make a phone call – provided that his telephone supports this function. You can withhold your number for the next call, i.e. you can call anonymously. Open the menu by pressing the Menu key.
Multiple conversations Some of these features are using supplementary network services. Ask your service provider about the availability and costs of these services. Call waiting With this service you can have a telephone conversation and still be informed that someone else is calling you. In this case you will hear the “call waiting” tone and you may answer this call (while your other conversation is put on hold).
Multiple conversations Accepting/rejecting a waiting call If you are conducting a conversation, you may accept a second incoming (waiting) call. Accepting the first call You are conducting a call. A second external party is calling you. You hear the call waiting signal. End the current call by pressing the talk key.

Multiple conversations Internal inquiry call When you are conducting an external call, you may want to make an inquiry call to an internal party without ending the original conversation. An internal inquiry call is performed entirely in the base station. This means that internal inquiry calls are not depending on the service offerings of your service provider.
Call forwarding You may forward incoming calls to another telephone number. Call forwarding is a supplementary network service and thus subject to availability from your service provider. Answer machine (Avena 137 only) Remote accessing your answer machine You can remote access your telephone by any DTMF-capable telephone. Dial your own telephone number. When deactivated, the answer machine answers after 10 rings. When activated, the answer machine answers after the numbers of rings you have set. Enter your remote PIN code after you have been prompted to do so.

Sending and receiving of SMS text messages is a supplementary network service and thus subject to availability from your service provider. Please ask your service provider about the availability, any charges and how to subscribe to this service. Not all telephones can receive SMS messages. So if you want to send someone an SMS message, first verify that the person who should receive the message has an SMS-capable telephone.

Handset settings Setting the volume/the ring melody You can set the volume of the handset ring melody in 5 levels or turn it off completely. By pressing the -key (approx. 2 seconds) the ring melody is switched on/off. symbol indicates that the ring melody is off (“do not disturb”). Open the menu by pressing the Menu key.

Base station settings Changing the PIN code The PIN code is a 4-digit secret number to protect your telephone from unauthorised use. At factory, the PIN code is initially set to “0000”. Open the menu by pressing the Menu key. Select Setup BS , press the Menu key.

Select the relevant format for date/time and enter date and time and press the Menu key. Note The time and date setting is stored in the base station. This means that each change of the time and/or date applies to all other handsets which are logged on to the same base station.
Base station settings Selecting the flash time The “flash signal” is sometimes required to perform special network service functions. Ask your service provider for further details on when to use such a flash signal. Open the menu by pressing the Menu key. Select Setup BS , press the Menu key.

Supplementary network services To activate some network functions, you need to send special codes to the network. Often these codes contain special characters such as . In some cases, the flash signal is required. You can enter this by pressing .
Connecting to a PBX Compatibility Your telephone is designed for use in the analogue telephone network and can be operated on a PBX that supports DTMF dialling and flash signalling. Contact your network operator for further information. Specifying the network access code If your telephone is connected to a PBX, you may have to specify a network access code to seize an outside telephone line.
