Front Wheel Repair - Bearing Removal
Refer to Figure A-3.
1. Remove the hub cap (G) from the wheel hub by pry-
ing around the perimeter of the raised lip at the base
of the cap with a claw hammer, wedge bar, or other
prying bar.
NOTE: To prevent damage to the cap, pry it off gradual-
ly by applying outward pressure at points evenly spaced
around the cap.
2. Loosen the set screw (E) that secures the set collar
(F) to the axle of the spindle assembly, and slide the
collar off the shaft.
3. Inspect the axle for burrs at the contact point with the
collar set screw, and carefully file down any burrs that
could scratch the inner races of the cone bearings
when the bearings are removed.
4. Pull the wheel out slightly to make the outer cone
bearing and spacers accessible, and then push the
wheel back in. Remove the cone bearing (D) and
spacer washers (B) from the shaft.
5. Pull the wheel completely off the axle, using care to
ensure that the rear cone bearing, seal, and spacer
remain on the axle.
6. Pull the rear spacer (A), washer (B) seal (C), and
cone bearing (D) off the axle. Keep the outer and
inner cone bearings separated to ensure that the
original bearing positions will be observed if the bear-
ings are placed back into the wheel.
7. Wipe off excessive grease from the axle, and inspect
it for excessive wear, scoring, or any other damage
that indicates that replacement of the spindle assem-
bly is necessary.
8. Wipe off excessive grease from the cone bearings,
and clean them thoroughly with safety solvent. Dry
the bearings with a low pressure air stream, and
inspect carefully for signs of wear such as pitting,
score marks, cracking, or chipping. Replace the
bearing if necessary, along with the mating bearing
cup in the wheel hub.
9. To remove the bearing cup from the wheel hub, use a
bearing puller. Do not attempt to punch the bearing
cup out of the hub using a rod and hammer, as this
could damage the inside diameter of the wheel hub.

11. After the bearing cup is installed, coat the bearing
contact surface with a liberal application of wheel
bearing grease. If no further service is to be per-
formed, apply a liberal coating of grease to the cone
bearings, and reinstall the wheel assembly on the unit
in the reverse order of part removal. Refer to Figure
A-4 for assembly.
NOTE: Install a new bearing seal on the axle when
installing new cone bearings. Reusing the old seal may
allow dirt and debris to enter the bearings, or may allow
grease to escape.
12. Push the set collar (F) in tightly against the outer axle
washers (B), and tighten the set screw (E) in the col-
lar securely. Spin the wheel to check for smooth
operation, and check for wobble by attempting to
move the wheel side to side. Loosen the collar and
reposition if necessary to correct any wobbling.
