Unusual Attitude Recoveries
Purpose: To recognize unusual attitudes in a timely manner. Then, to expeditiously recover the
aircraft to level flight as safely as possible, and without exceeding the aircraft limitations.
Entry:
o Ensure all loose Items are stowed
o
Area:
Clear
o
Mixture:
Rich (or as required)
o
Prop:
2250 RPM
o
Throttle:
As Required.
Your Instructor will set up unusual attitudes for your practice. Different combinations of pitch, bank
and airspeed will be practiced. Make sure transfer of aircraft control is positive. When told to
recover, use appropriate procedures to bring the aircraft safely and promptly back to level flight.
Nose Low Recoveries:
o Roll:
towards wings level
o
Power:
to idle (or as required)
o
Pull:
Increase backpressure to bring the nose up to the horizon
Nose
High
Recoveries
(with
flying
airspeed):
o
Power:
Add
full
power
unless
airspeed
is
critically
low
o
Roll:
Increase
bank
toward
the
nearest
horizon
o
Pull:
Increase
backpressure
to
bring
the
nose
down
to
the
horizon
Nose High Recoveries (without flying airspeed, or if flying airspeed is lost):
o
Power:
Reduce power to prevent yaw
o Controls: Neutralize the Ailerons and Elevators to "unload" the aircraft.
o
Recovery: As airspeed is regained, execute the appropriate recovery.
Inverted Recoveries:
o Roll:
Towards the nearest horizon
o
Power:
As required
o
Pull:
Do NOT "pull through" in a Split-S type maneuver
Common Errors: Slow recognition and application of procedures, poor coordination.
