Glossary of Interior Styling

B a c k o f F r o n t Seat Back—The back of front
seat that is visible to the rear seat passengers.
Also called division. Also called frame.
B a c k r e s t — T h e upright cushion against which
passengers rest.
B a c k l i g h t — R e a r window.
B e l t Lina—The uppermost part of doors and
rear quarters, extending from windshield base

to rear shelf.
B e n c h T y p e S e a t — A
r e g u l a r seat
w i t h
straight-across bench type cushion and back-
rest as contrasted with bucket seats.
Bezel— A sloping rim around an object such
as headlamp lens, brake pedal, etc.
Biscuits—Style of upholstering when material
is formed into square or oblong sections by
seams or pressed indentations.
B o d y Cloth—The basic trim material used on
seat inserts—usually the heaviest weight.
Bolsters—The front, side or center part of a
seat cushion, separated from the back or center
by a welt, lace or seam. The top, side or center

part of a backrest sometimes extending along
I
the sides in a U or H shape.

B u t t o n s — U s e d to produce a tufted or biscuit
effect in the upholstery design; to retain trim
I
covers and as an appearance item.
C o a t e d F a b r i c — A synthetic material with a
leather-like appearance, also called expanded
vinyl and elascofab (Elastic-coated-fabric).
C e n t e r P i l l a r — A rear door hinge support struc-
I
ture between front and rear doors terminating
at belt line on hardtop sedans.
C o m b i n a t i o n — W h e n referred to interior up-
holstery, it is the complete interior that includes
a combination of colors and materials such as
cloth, leather, vinyl, etc.
Terminology
C o u p e T y p e Seat—Individual backrests, cre-
ating a notched appearance. On 4-door styles
the backrests are anchored and do not fold as
they do in 2-door models.
C o w l Q u a r t e r s — T h e section forward of the
front door on inside of front compartment.
Cushion—The lower seat cushion or section
upon which passengers sit.
C u s h i o n Face—Vertical surface forming front
and sides of seat cushion.
C u t a n d Sew—Cutting material to pattern;
sewing and molding to form a set of "trim
stock".
D i e l e c t r i c — A heat and pressure process to
unite, form and make designs on fabrics.
Division—The back part of front seat. Sepa-
ration between front and rear compartments.
D o o r Pull—A grip handle on upper door panel.
D o o r Pad—The upholstered part of a door or
section below window.
D u s t Boot—Convertible top cover when low-
ered. Also called top boot.
E m b o s s e d — A dielectrically formed design on
coated fabric.
E x p a n d e d V i n y l — A n extra thick vinyl coated
fabric. The soft resilient feel is attained by
sandwiching a sponge-like cellular
structure
between the backing fabric and plastic top-
coating.
F r o n t S e a t Back Panel—A machine-formed
vinyl panel that covers top and sides of front
seat back.
G a r n i s h M o u l d i n g — T h e frame next to the
glass on the inside of windshield, door, rear
window and along side of headlining.
inserts—When used with reference to uphol-
stery, it is the center section back of bolster on
