  • Page 2 Thank you for choosing Senal. The Senal SCI-3212 is a rugged small-diaphragm condenser microphone capable of delivering professional-quality audio for a variety of recording applications in the field or in the studio Its unique design features three interchangeable capsules that allow this microphone to change polar patterns quickly and easily The omnidirectional, cardioid, and supercardioid capsules provide adaptability for a wide range of recording scenarios The excellent transient response and high sensitivity assure detailed and accurate sound when recording instruments or dialog High SPL handling capability enables close mic placement to cymbals, pianos, guitars, and other acoustic instruments, as well as recording in high- noise environments As a matched pair, the SCI-3212’s versatility provides the option of selecting between several stereo miking techniques for a wide and true stereo sound An included shock mount allows for easy boompole mounting when recording dialog indoors or in the studio The included foam windscreen minimizes wind noise when shooting outdoors Introduction ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪...

  • Page 5 Omnidirectional capsule Due to the high sensitivity of the SCI-3212, the omnidirectional capsule is suitable for capturing ambient sounds of the environment and for nature recording It’s also a good choice when recording live sound or music Consider the omnidirectional capsule when close-miking guitars or voices in the studio or in quiet spaces without background noise As a matched pair, the omnidirectional capsule is ideal for A/B stereo recording See A/B (Spaced Pair) technique on page 6 Cardioid capsule The cardioid capsule offers a wide variety of uses in the field and in the studio It’s ideal for capturing acoustic instruments in live and studio settings, and it’s very effective as a drum mic or as a drum overhead When recording speech or dialog in the studio or on location, the cardioid polar pattern is less susceptible to picking up reflections than shotgun microphones This makes it an excellent option for boompole use As a stereo pair, the cardioid capsules are excellent for X/Y and ORTF stereo recording See X/Y (Coincident Pair) technique on page 7 and ORTF (Near Coincident) technique on page 8 Supercardioid capsule The supercardioid capsule focuses on the sound directly in front of it while rejecting off-axis sound This is advantageous when recording interviews or dialog in noisy environments It is also well suited for loud stage environments The Interchangeable Microphone Capsules ▪ ▪ ▪...
  • Page 6 Stereo Microphone Techniques Your matched pair of Senal SCI-3212 microphones is ideal for capturing stereo sound Microphone placement is crucial in successful stereo recordings The following are a few common microphone techniques for creating stereo sound images As in all miking scenarios, experimenting with the distance from your sound source and the distance between the microphones will ultimately result in the best stereo recordings A/B (Spaced Pair) technique Use the omnidirectional capsules • Place the microphones parallel to each other and point both microphones toward the sound source • There’s no hard and fast rule for achieving the best results using this technique Experiment by adjusting the distance of the microphones from the sound source, and the distance of the mics from each other • Send the mono signal from each microphone to its own track Note: Due to the timing offset of the sound reaching each microphone, you may experience phase cancellation if mixing the stereo signal down to a mono track Stereo Microphone Techniques ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪...
  • Page 7 X/Y (Coincident Pair) technique Use the cardioid capsules Since the capsules are placed close together, the stereo image won’t be as wide as the A/B or M/S techniques • Place the two microphones at an angle between 90° and 135° so that the two capsules are very close to each other but not touching • The ideal configuration is to have the microphones placed vertically so that one capsule is directly above the other However, placing the microphones side by side will also deliver satisfactory results • The wider the angle is, the wider the stereo image will be 90°–135° • Send the mono signal from each microphone to its own track Note: If you are mixing the two tracks down to a mono track, you will not encounter the potential phase cancellation issues that can occur in the other mic techniques Stereo Microphone Techniques ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪...
  • Page 8 ORTF (Near Coincident) technique Use the cardioid capsules This technique is good for recording dialog or sound in stereo without picking up a lot of the ambient room noise • Spread the microphones outward at an angle of 110° while making sure that the capsules are about 65″ (17 cm) apart • Send the mono signal from each microphone to its own track Note: Due to the timing offset of the sound reaching each 110° microphone, you may experience phase cancellation if mixing the stereo signal down to a mono track Stereo Microphone Techniques ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪...
  • Page 9 M/S (Mid/Side) technique Use either the cardioid or omnidirectional capsules This technique requires one SCI- 3212 microphone and a figure-8 (bidirectional) large-diaphragm condenser microphone like the Senal SCM-660 This technique is excellent for capturing the ambience surrounding your sound source and often offers the greatest stereo width • Point the SCI-3212 directly at the sound source (mid) • Place the figure-8 microphone just below the capsule Sound of the SCI-3212 and at a 90° angle (side) Source 90° • Send the stereo signal from the figure-8 microphone to a stereo track, and the mono signal from the cardioid microphone to its own mono track • The cardioid microphone (mid) will record the sound source directly in front of it while rejecting the off-axis sound The figure-8 microphone (side) will record the off-axis sound Note: Mixing these signals can be tricky Duplicate the side channel and reverse the polarity Then combine both side tracks onto one stereo track Mix in the mid channel with the stereo track The louder the stereo side track is, the greater the stereo width will be Stereo Microphone Techniques ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪...
