whenever
a

reads to the end of a file that
it has been given as input.
It can also
be
generated
at
the
terminal
with a
control-~.
Commands
rece1v1ng

from

receive an end-of-file \vhen
the
command
sending
them
input
com-
pletes.
Most
commands
terminate when
they receive an end-of-file.
The
shell
has an option to ignore end-of-file from
a terminal input, which makes it
possi-
ble to avoid logging out accidentally by
typing too many control-d's.
Each file in ZEUS has a name
consisting
of
up
to
14 characters, not including
the slash character
(I),
which
is
used
in
path name building.
Most file names
do not begin with the pericd
character.
They
contain
only
letters and digits,
with perhaps
a
pericd
separating
the
root
portion
of
the file 'name from an
extension.
horne directory Each user has a horne directory,' which is
given
in the password file
1~/passwd.
The user is placed in the horne directory
when
first logging in.
The
~
or chdir
command with no
arguments
returns
the
user
to
this
directory.
The name of
this directory is recorded in the
shell
variable
~.
Immediate (I) addressing mode
In this mode, the operand
is
contained
within the instruction.
Index (X) addressing mode
In this mode,
the
operand
address
is
obtained
by
adding
the contents of an
index' register to a
base
address
con-
tained in the instruction.
index register A word register used to contain
a
dis-
placement
for
use in effective address
calculation.
