Warm up
engine and check
radiator,
auxiliary
tank,
water pump, hoses
and hose connections for
leaks
with
engine hot.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
The cooling
system
must
be kept in good condition
if it is
to cool the
engine prop<.'riy
under
all operating
conditions.
The cooling
system
should
he
kept
clean. Usc only rUS1-
inhibiting
anti-freeze Solulions,
following the manufac-
turer's specification. VVhen plain water is used as
a coolant,
it is recommended that
a
rUSt
inhibitor bc added
to
the
coolant.
Since
the
action of
the
cooling system controls
the
operating temperature
of
the
l'ngine,
it
is essential
that
sys-
tematic inspection
of units
in the
system be made
pcriodi-
ca.lly to
maintain
the
cnlciency of
the
system.
The radiator auxiliary tank
cap should Uc
removed
and
the coolant level
checked
frequently. If the
coolant
level is
low, water or anti-freeze should
be
added.
NOTE: Since
the volume
of solution
in the
cooling
system
expands
when heated, the
cooling system should
he left from
one
pim to
one
quart
low
if filled
cold,
especially
when
anti-frecfc
is used, to prevent loss

of solution
through the
radiator auxiliary lank
overflow
pipe.
The vapor
line
between
the radiator
auxiliary
lank
and
the
radiator
lOp lank
should
be
checked regular!)
to
see
thal
it is not uent or sagging between the ends of the line.
This vapor
line
vents air or vapor from the radiator to the
radiator auxiliary
lank
where
it
can escape throul'{h
the
prrssure
cap.
A
bent or
sa.
~ ~ing
line
may accumulate water
or vapor in a pocket and prevent
[he transfer
of
air.
The system should be thoroughly checked for
leaks
and all
hose clamps
tightened occasionalJy.
Twice a
year
the radiator
and cylinder block drain cocks
should
be
opened,
all
coolant
removed
and the system
thoroughly
flushed.
The front of
the radiator
core should
be
checked occa-
sionally
for
bugs,
leaves,
ClC.,
which would restrict air cir-
culation
.
These can
ue
flushed
uut
from
the uaek side of
the
radiator
with an ordinary waler hose and city water
pressure.
The
fan
belt
tensioo
should be checked occasionally and if
necessary,
adjusted.
The cooling system should be checked
durin~
periods of
sulJ-frcczinl{ temperatures
LO
deLermine if the system con.
tallls adequate amounts of
ami-freeze.
