4. Lubricate valve stems with engine oil
to
insure free
movement of valves in their guides.

normalized, cheek the clearance: between
the rocker arms and the valve stems with a feeler gauge
(fig. 65). The clearance should be :

rocker arm adjusting"
serew lock nut and turn
the screw clockwise
slightly to decrease the
clearance and counter·
clockwise to increase
clearance. Tighten lock
nut and recheck clear·
ance.

10staH rocker arm cover using a new gasket. Make sure
cover seats properly on gasket and tighten retaining
bolts. Check for oil leaks and install upper i~ition shield.
DISTRIBUTOR POlNTS
Correct distributor point gap is very important.
If
the can·
dition of the distributor points is questiory:d, proceed as
follows:

Inspection nod Cleaning
1. Remove the upper ignition shield.
2. Remove spark plug wires from distributor cap
examine terminals for corrosion. The
wires should
checked fot damaged insulation
and oil s
condition.
3. Release the distributor cap clamps, remOVe cap
lift off rotor. Check cap and distributor rotOl'
cracks, burned, or pitted contaClJ.
4. Separate the points and inspect them
badly burned condition.
5. Clean the points with a breaker point file remov'
the high spots only. Do not use emery cloth Or,
paper to clean points.
If
the points do not clean
with a
rew strokes of the file, they .hould be rep
as described in following steps 6-10.
Replacement
6. Loosen the inside terminal nut at the movable
point
spring and lift the point out.
7. Remove the stationary point lock screw and remO\'
point and arm.
8.
Carefully wipe the protcctive film of oil from the con·
tact points of the "new set.
