TOWING
Proper lifting or towing equippment is necessary to
prevent damage to the vehicle during any towing
op~
eratian. State and local lows applicable to vehicles
in tow must be followed.
WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION:
If the transmission, rear axle and steering system are
not damaged, the vehicle may be towed on all four
wheels. If they are damaged, use a towing dolly.
Remember that power brake assist will not be available
when the engine is inoperative.
WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:
Your vehicle may be towed with all four wheels on the
ground, at speeds of less than 30 mph, for distances up
to 10 miles, provided the transmission, rear axle and
steering system are operative.
If the transmission or rear axle are inoperative, tow
with the rear wheels off the ground, or have the
propeller shaft disconnected.
Caution:
With either automatic or manual transmission, the
selector lever (or gearshift leverl
must be set at
NEUTRAL, the ignition key in the "OFF" or "ACC"
position and the parking brake released.
5-2
If the ignition is in the "LOCK" position -with the
anti·theft steering column lock ready to operate -
a
dolly should be placed under the rear wheels and the
vehicle towed with the front wheel raised.
Note:
Power brake assist will not be available when the
engine is inoperative. When towing under such condi·
tion, the effort required to brake the car will be
substantially increased over that required with power
assist system operating.
DRIVING ON SNOW, ICE, OR SAND
When hazardous driving is encountered due to snow,
ice, mud, or sand, follow these suggestions:
1. Drive cautiously, allowing extra distance for braking.
2. When braki ng, depress the foot brake with a light
on-and-off motion until the vehicle is stopped.
3. Avoid sudden steering movements.
4. Use sand, rock salt, tire chains, a piece of car-
peting, tree branches, etc., under the rear wheels
to provide traction on ice, packed snow or mUd.
5. If stalled in snow or sand, use second gear and
accelerate slowly.
Low gear may be used, if
necessary. Move slowly, to avoid spinning the rear
wheels.
