1.2.2. PROTECTIVE CASING

The area between the marking head and the printing surface must have the protective casing to prevent
user access to the laser marking system.
Making this protective casing is the responsibility of the installer in each country.
Example of a protective casing:
The steps required to create a protective casing are shown below.
Required materials for CO2 laser systems:
• Polycarbonate greater than 2 mm thick for top cover and sides.
• 1 Electric saw
• 1 Polisher
• Black anodized aluminium or a carbon plate for rear cover.
Required materials for YAG or Fiber laser systems:
• Black anodized aluminium for top cover, rear cover and sides.
• 1 Electric saw
• 1 Polisher
• Top cover: This part goes from the focus lens to the rear cover of the protective casing. A hole must
be made in the surface that is in direct contact with the head where it will be connected to the head.
• Right side: This part closes the right side of the protective casing. A hole must be made in this
cover to allow the marking products to pass through.
• Left side: This part closes the left side of the protective casing. A hole must be made in this cover to
allow the marking products to pass through. The vent tube will be attached directly over this piece in
order to vent fumes that might damage the focus lens.
• Rear cover: This part closes the protective casing in the rear. A black anodized aluminium or
carbon plate should be placed on the inside of the cover. This aluminium or carbon plate must have
minimum dimensions of 200 x 200 mm.
• Metal support: A metal reinforcement should be made, as shown in the previous drawing. This
reinforcement should be fixed to the production line.
MAKING TOP COVER
The dimensions of this cover can vary depending on the marking head position, the production line width
and the height of the products to be marked.
So, the length of this part will be:
Length = (2 x desired casing height) + (production line width)
Steps to follow:
(1) Cut a piece of polycarbonate/aluminium, according to the dimensions specified above, using a
jig saw.
(2) Polish the edges of the top cover.
(3) Mark the position where this part needs to be folded.
(4) Make cuts (using the jig saw) at the edges where the piece will be folded.
(5) Place the area that will be folded over a thermic resistor (avoiding contact with it).
(6) Fold the side to form a right-angle with the horizon.
