PROGRAMS LIST-
IONTOPHORESIS
Carry out the treatment of ionophoresys only on channel 1 and with the grey
cables
Galvanic (direct) current maintains a constant intensity over time, allowing the movement of
charged particles across tissues. If the charged particles are filled with medicinal substances,
then the continuous current promotes the penetration of these substances into tissues. This tech-
nique is called iontophoresis.
Iontophoresis can be used to administer water-soluble drugs across the epidermis (skin). It is used
for all kind of treatments effective on local inflammatory states such as bursitis, tendonitis, fasci-
tis, myositis and capsulitis.
PRECAUTIONS
If the treatment is not performed correctly or the intensity is too high, iontophoresis may cause
skin irritation and burns. The recommended current density for an electrode is 0.2 mA/cm2. The
skin must be free of lesions and injuries; do not shave the skin before treatment because razors
may cause micro-cuts. Iontophoresis should not be used on persons with metallic implants or in
contact with metallic items, e.g. tables and chairs.
Use of iontophoresis programs
The duration of iontophoresis programs is automatically set for 10 min. Once the program has
started, it is possible to modify the duration by pressing the FUNCTION key: the clock and the
time begin to flash. Use the UP and DOWN keys to modify the time.
The current intensity can also be adjusted from a minimum value of 100 mA to a maximum of 10
mA. For safety, a current density of 0.2 mA/cm2 at the electrode is recommended.

Before performing iontophoresis, always consult your physician.
A number of medications are available for iontophoresis. Before carrying out any treatment,
consult with your physician or physical therapist in the choice of an appropriate medication.
Read the instructions provided with the medications prior to use.
DO NOT APPLY AN IONTOPHORESIS MEDICATION DIRECTLY TO THE SKIN. Apply the medication
to the absorbent surface of the electrode corresponding to the medication's polarity; the absor-
bent surface of the other electrode should be dampened with slightly salted water, to promote
conductivity.
In the following table, common iontophoresis medications are listed together with their applica-
tions.
