Restarting the Library Following a Power Outage

The StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library is designed to recover automatically if
power is interrupted. If someone inadvertently unplugs the power cord or throws a
circuit breaker at the wall panel or if building power is lost altogether, the library
returns to its last power state once line power is restored. If the library was ON before
the outage, it will be ON afterward. If OFF, it will be OFF afterwards.
So, if the library was powered ON at the time of the outage, the library will boot up
normally as soon as power is once more available. But, if the library was powered OFF
when the outage occurred, the library does not automatically restart. When power is
restored, the library powers up and runs just long enough to check its previous power
state. Since it was OFF at the time of the outage, it powers itself OFF after a few
seconds.
Restarting a library that was off prior to a power interruption is thus exactly like
restarting any other library that is off. See

Auditing

Every cartridge in the SL150 library has a label that uniquely identifies it (for more
information, see
the library also has its own, unique library address (a storage slot, for example, has an
address of the form module number, side, row number, and column number: 1,Left,1,2).
Auditing is the process of checking each address in the library and recording the label
of the tape (if any) that resides there. The resulting media catalog supplies the location
information upon which automated tape operations depend.
Audits are required whenever tape locations may have changed and whenever tapes
may have been added or removed. The library automatically performs an audit
whenever it powers up and whenever tape magazines are reinserted. But host
applications and library administrators and operators can also audit the library on
demand.
Normally, the storage- or backup-management application on the library host requests
audits. You generally want to avoid auditing the library from the browser-based user
interface, because doing so interrupts host application operations, possibly for a
considerable time if the library is large. An audit of a 30-cartridge library takes about
seven minutes, for example.
When circumstances warrant, however, you can audit the library using the procedure
below:

Audit the Library
