A WÄRTSILÄ 26 engine could shut down when additional load is added due to overload protection mechanisms in the propulsion control system or due to failure in proper load sharing among engines. If speed droop or isochronous load sharing is not functioning correctly, engines may not share load equally, leading to one engine being overloaded. Additionally, if the electronic speed control fails to adjust the speed reference properly or fuel limitations are exceeded, the engine could shut down to prevent damage.
