5. Grip each blade and make sure that there is not more
than a total of 3 mm (1/8 inch) of free movement in
either direction from the rotor. If there is more than
a total of 3 mm (1/8 inch) of free movement, replace
the blade.
6. Check each pair of opposite blades for a weight
difference between them.
Note: Each pair of opposite blades should not have a
weight difference of more than 10 grams.
DANGER
A worn or damaged blade can break, and a piece of
the blade could be thrown toward you or bystanders,
resulting in serious personal injury or death.
• Inspect the blades periodically for wear or
damage.
• Replace a worn or damaged blade.

Replacing the Blades

Service Interval: Yearly—Replace the blades.
Note: To maintain balance, only replace blades as pairs or
replace all of the blades on the rotor. Bushes, bolts, and nuts
should all be replaced at the same time.
Note: There are 2 blade service kits available for blade
replacement; contact the Parts Catalog for your machine.
1. Raise and secure the cutting units with the transport
latches.
2. If you are replacing blades on the center cutting unit,
remove the entire cutting unit unless an overhead lift
is available.
3. Turn the rotor slowly by hand so that each row of flails
are in the desired position and can be easily accessed.
4. Use the rotor locking tool (provided in the
blade-sharpening kit) to lock the rotor.
5. Remove debris from the bolt head and nut and clean
the protruding thread with a wire brush.
6. Mark the position of the bolt head so bolts can be
replaced from the same side.
7. Holding the blade in a rag or padded glove, remove the
nut, blade bolt, bush, and blade
Note: If needed, apply penetrating oil to the thread to
make the nut removal easier.

8. Discard the blade, bush, nut, and bolt.
9. Install a new blade and bush with a new nut and blade
bolt
(Figure
67).
Note: Pay attention to the bolt-head-position
markings so that the bolt is replaced in the same
direction.
10. Torque the fasteners to 45 N∙m (33 ft-lb).

Checking the Blade Bolts

Service Interval: Every 50 hours
Make sure that all blade bolts are torqued to 45 N∙m (33 ft-lb).
