After the tray is pushed in and detected:

The Tray lift motor lifts the tray until the lift sensor detects the
top of the stack at the feed position
The main points are shown above.
Note that the 'upper limit sensor' in the service manual is called the 'lift
sensor' in the component layout and point-to-point diagram.
