Handling the Original Document
This section describes how to load the original document on the Platen Glass or in the ADF.
Original Document Requirements
The original documents you load on the Platen Glass or in the ADF for copying, scanning, or
faxing must meet these requirements:
Document type
Size (W xL)

• Paper documents
• Photographs
• Books
• Documents that are not
suitable for the ADF
Max. 8.5 x 11.7 inches /
216 x 297 mm

Multipage documents of the same size,
thickness, and weight
• Max. 8.5 x 14.0 inches /216 x 356 mm
• Min. 5.8 x 5.8 inches /148 x 148 mm
Only A4 or Letter-sized documents for duplex
copying and scanning, 2-on-1 copy, and 4-on-
1 copy
• A4 or Letter size: Max. 35 sheets (20 Ib / 75
gsm paper), up to 0.20 inches /
5 mm in height
• Legal size: Max. 30 sheets (20 Ib /75 gsm
paper), up to 0.16 inches /4 mm in height
• Other sizes: 1 sheet
13 to 24 Ib / 50 to 90 gsm
Loading Original Documents
Load originals to copy, scan, or fax on the Platen Glass or in the ADF.

Note
• Make sure any glue, ink, correction fluid, or the like on the original document is completely dry
before loading it on the Platen Glass or in the ADF.
However, do not load glued originals in the ADF even if the glue is dry, as this may cause paper
jams.
• Remove all staples, paper clips, and the like before feeding the document.
• Load Legal-sized documents in the ADF.
• Do not load the following types of documents in the ADF. They will jam.
- Wrinkled or creased paper
- Curled paper
- Torn paper
- Paper with holes
- Glued paper
- Carbon paper or carbon-backed paper
- Surface treated paper
- Onion skin or thin paper
- Photograph or thick paper
