Installing the 128-Port ASYNC Adapter

The 128-Port ASYNC adapter is an option for the HMC. It must be configured by the
customer engineer when the HMC is installed. The 128-Port ASYNC adapter software is
installed in the HMC base software installation package.
This adapter provides the control function and connectors to attach eight 16-port remote
async nodes (RANs). When all eight nodes are attached, this combination provides
128, EIA-232 or RS-422 communication ports.

128-Port ASYNC Adapter Line Connectors

The 128-Port ASYNC adapter has two 15 pin D-shell connectors on it. The connector
that is closest to the edge connector that plugs into the HMC PC is line 1. The remote
access nodes (RANs) are cabled in a daisy chain and are terminated using a line
terminator. The following figure shows the adapter and the line connectors.

The following figure shows an example of a typical RAN configuration. RANs are
connected to both line 1 and line 2 of the adapter in this example.
