CONDITION
Excessive Play or Looseness in
Steering System.
Hard Steering —
Excessive Effort
Required at Steering Wheel
POSSIBLE CAUSE
Front wheel bearings loosely
adjusted.
Worn upper ball joints.
Steering wheel loose on shaft,
loose pitman arm, tie rods,
steering arms or steering
linkage ball nuts.
Excessive over-center lash.
Worm thrust bearings
loosely adjusted.
Low or uneven tire pressure.
Insufficient or improper lubricant
in steering gear or front
suspension.
Steering shaft flexible coupling
misaligned.
Steering gear adjusted too tight.
Front wheel alignment
incorrect. (Manual Gear)

CORRECTION
Adjust to obtain proper end play.
Check and replace ball joints
if necessary.
Tighten to specification, replace
if worn or damaged.
Adjust over-center preload to
specifications.
Adjust worm thrust bearing preload
to specifications.
Inflate to specified pressures.
Lubricate as specified. Re-
lubricate at specified intervals.
Align column and coupling.
Adjust over-center and thrust
bearing preload to specifications.
Adjust to specifications.
