To test the defrost heater and thermostat
w h e n th e e va p o rato r te mp e ra tu re i s * 1 5 o
F or b e l o w p ro ce ed a s fo l l ow s:
1 . D i sc on n e c t t h e u n i t f ro m p o we r sou r ce
a n d p l u g i t i n t o a wa ttme te r.
P l u g w at t m e te r in to p ow e r so u r ce a n d
m an u a l l y a d van ce th e d efr ost time r to
th e de f ro s t cycle . Se e the d e f ro st time r
se c t i o n f o r i nfo rma ti on o n ma nu a lly
a d v a n c i n g t h e time r.
The wattmeter should read 550 to 600
wa t t s d e p e n d in g o n the mo d el ( to tal
wa t t a g e o f t h e d i vi d e r he a ter , time r
m o t o r an d d e fro st he a te r). Sh o u ld th e
reading be 0 to 4.5 watts the defrost
heater or thermostat is defective. To
f urther isolate the defective part
proceed to Step 4.
Disconnect unit f rom wat tmeter .
F ollow S teps 2, 3 and 4 of testing the
heater and therm ost at when the
evaporator temperature is above
+ 1 5 0 F o r h i g h e r .
6. lf the meter reads between 42K and
63K ohms, the defrost thermostat is
defective.
To use an ohmmeter set the meter to R x
1K scale. lf the r eading is approx im ately
20 to 23 ohms, the defrost heater and
therm ost at are operat ive.
REPLACING RADIANT DEFROST
HEATER
To reach t he heat er f or replacement, it is
necessary t o rem ove t he following i tem s:
1. D isconnect the unit f rom pow er
sour ce.
2 . R emove the fr eezer shelves and the
lreezer basket.
3 . R emove ice tr ay r ack, if used. On
m odels w it h an ice maker, it mus t be
r emoved.
