Chapter 5. Solving problems

This section provides basic troubleshooting information to help you diagnose and
solve some problems that might occur.
If you cannot locate and correct the problem using the information in this chapter,
see Appendix A, "Getting help and technical assistance," on page 109 for more
information.

Diagnostic tools overview

The following tools are available to help you identify and solve hardware-related
problems:
v Computer Support flowchart
v POST beep codes and error messages
v Diagnostic programs
v Troubleshooting charts
v System-board error LEDs

The Computer Support flowchart on the following page will help you determine
how to access help from IBM and register your computer.
The power-on self-test generates beep codes and messages to indicate
successful test completion or the detection of a problem. See "Power-on self-test
(POST)" on page 79 for more information. Additional information is recorded in
the system error logs. (For detailed information, see Error Logs under
"Configuration/Setup Utility menu choices" on page 24.
The system diagnostic programs are on a hidden partition on your computer hard
disk. These programs are the primary methods of testing the major components
of your computer. See "Diagnostic programs and error messages" on page 85 for
more information.
This charts lists problem symptoms and steps to correct each problem. See the
"Troubleshooting charts" on page 94 for more information.
An LED on the system board might also be lit to help isolate an error indicated
by the system error LED on the front of the computer. See the "System-board
error LEDs" on page 100 for more information.
