    General checkout The computer diagnostic programs are stored on the Device Drivers and IBM Enhanced Diagnostics CD. These programs are the primary method of testing the major components of the computer: the system board, Ethernet controller, video controller, RAM, keyboard, mouse (pointing device), diskette drive, serial ports, hard disk drives, and parallel port.

    Diagnostic error messages indicate that a problem exists; they are not intended to be used to identify a failing part. Troubleshooting and servicing of complex problems that are indicated by error messages should be performed by trained service personnel. Sometimes the first error to occur causes additional errors. In this case, the computer displays more than one error message.

    If your hard disk drive, including the partition where the Product Recovery program resides, becomes damaged or you replace the hard disk drive, you can use the IBM Product Recovery CD (see “Recovery CD (Windows XP)” on page 112) to recover the preinstalled operating system, application programs, and device drivers.

Restoring the factory-preinstalled device drivers is part of the Product Recovery program and the Device Drivers and IBM Enhanced Diagnostics CD.

    Connecting external options If you install an optional SCSI adapter, or use the secondary channel on the integrated SCSI controller for external devices, you can attach external SCSI devices, such as a SCSI storage expansion enclosure, to the computer. To use secondary channel for external SCSI devices, remove the SCSI knockout from the rear of the computer and secure the free end of the secondary channel cable in the new opening.
