On USB and IEEE-1394 (Firewire) capture cards

To connect your DV device to your system, your computer must first have
a capture card. You can use an IEEE-1394 or USB port to connect the
device to your system.
The difference between USB and IEEE-1394 capture cards:
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is an external bus standard that allows up to 12
mbps data transfer. One USB port can link up to 127 devices (i.e., modems,
keyboards, etc.), and support Plug and Play installations. This is available in
most systems.
IEEE-1394, on the other hand, is another external bus standard that allows
up to 400 mbps of data transfer and can connect approximately 63 periph-
eral devices. IEEE-1394 is also known by other names. Apple calls their
version Firewire while other companies call theirs iLink or Lynx.

System Tweaks

The following are useful, video-specific tweaks for improving the perfor-
mance of your system. Some of the paths may vary slightly between
various versions of Windows.
· If you have two hard drives on your system, install the software on your
system drive (usually C:) and capture the video to your other drive
(usually D:).
· Your display card shouldn't use too much of your resources just to
provide you with overlay. Right-click on your desktop, select Properties:
Settings. Lower the color depth to "High Color (16-bit)", and set the
screen resolution to 1024x768. You might want to disable some of the
high-end 3D gaming features, which have no bearing on video display.
· Make sure DMA is enabled. Click Control Panel: System - Device
