Tips
- Determ ine the depth before driving through
water .
- Do not stop the veh icle, dr ive in reverse or
switch the engine off when driving through
water.
- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the wate r level and
make it too deep for your veh icle to drive
through safely.
- Avoid driving through salt water (corrosion).
Economical and environmentally-friendly
driving
The amount of fue l consumption, the env iron-
mental impact a nd the wea r to the engine,
brakes and tires depends mos t ly on your dr iving
style. With an anticipatory and economic driv ing
style, fuel consumption can be reduced by ap -
proximate ly 10-15% . The following tips will help
you conserve the environment and your money at
the same time.
Anticipatory driving
A vehicle uses the mos t fuel when acce le rating.
When you drive with ant icipat ion, you do not
need to brake as often and thus acce lerate less.
When possib le, let your veh icle coast w ith a gear
engaged -
for examp le, when you notice that the
next traffic light is red.
Avoid full acceleration
You sho uld rare ly t ravel at the maximum vehicle
speed . High speeds cause a disproportionately
high increase in fuel consumption,
emissions and
traffic no ise. Slower driving saves fuel.
Reduce idling time
It pays off to stop t he engi ne, for examp le when
at railroad crossings or traffic lights with longer
red lights . Stopping the engine for 30-40 sec -
onds already saves more fuel than the amount of
extra fuel needed to restart the eng ine.
It
takes a very long time in idle to warm the en-
gine up to ope rating temperature
. Wear and
emissions are especially high in the warm-up
60
phase. Therefore, you shou ld begin driving im-
mediate ly after starting the engine . Avoid high
RPMs whi le doing this.
Service regularly
By serv icing your vehi cle regularly, you can he lp
to red uce fue l cons umption before you even sta rt
to drive . The maintenance condition of your vehi -
cle not on ly affects traffic safety and long-term
val ue but also impacts fuel consumption .
A poor ly serv iced engine can lead to fu el con-
sumption that is 10% higher than normal.
Also chec k the oil level when ref uel ing . The oil
consumption
depends largely on t he engine load
and speed. It is norma l for the oil consump t ion
of a new engine to reach its lowest point on ly af -
ter a certain amo unt of use. Therefore, the oil
consumption can only be properly judged after
approximately 3,000 mi (5,000 km) have been
driven.
Avoid short trip s
The engine and exha ust cleaning system must
reach their optima l operat ing tempe rat ure to ef-
fect ively reduce consumpt ion and emissions.
A cold engine consumes a d isproportionate ly
high amount of fuel. The engine is at operating
temperat ure and cons umption has no rmalized
on ly after approx imately
four
kilometers.

Note
Do not leave eng ine idling unattended
after
starting. If warning lights sho uld come on to
indicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also prod uces
heat, w hich could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other proper-
ty .

Note
- Have your vehicle ma intained properly and
in accordance with the se rvice recommenda-
t ions in your Warranty

Main t enance book-
