Thes e fuels contain substances that can se-
vere ly damage the fuel system and the en-
gine if the engine is started .
Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail , you can
still open the flap manually - for detailed instruc-
tions see ~ page
195 .
You can find the fuel tank capacity of your vehicle
in

262 .
The label on the ins ide of t he fuel filler flap tells
you the correct f uel for your vehicle. For mo re in-
formation about fuel specifications , see

191 .
Your vehicle fuel tank has an onboa rd refuelling
vapor recovery syst em . This fea t ure helps to pre-
vent fuel vapors from escaping from the tank and
polluting the environment while you refuel your
vehicle. In order to fill the tank properly while
protecting the environment, please follow this
refueling procedure carefully.

WARNING
Unde r norma l operating conditions, never car-
ry additiona l fuel containers in your car. Gas
canisters and other containers used to trans-
port fuel can be dangerous. Such containers,
full or empty, may leak and could cause a fire
in a collision . If you must transport fuel to
use for your lawn mower, snow blower, etc.,
be very careful and always observe local and
state laws regarding the use, transportation
and storage of such fuel containers. Make cer-
tain the con t ainer meets industry standards
(ANSI/ASTM F852 - 86).

Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fuel tank is
completely empty . The irregular supply of
fue l can cause misfir ing. Gasoline could enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalyt ic
converter.

The fue l filler door is unlocked or locked by the
central locking system.
Opening the fuel cap
"' Press on the left side of the fue l filler door to
open ~ fig . 176 .
"'U nscrew the tank cap counterclockwise.
"' Place the cap from above on the open fuel filler
door ~ fig. 177.
Closing the fuel cap
"' Screw the tank cap on to the right on the fi ller
neck unt il it cannot turn any farther.
"' Then press on the left s ide of the tank door un-
til it latches.
Once the pump nozzle switches off , the fuel tank
is "full ". Do not fill the tank mo re . Otherwise the
expans ion space in the tank w ill be filled .
The correct fuel type for your vehicle can be
found on a label located on the inside of the fuel
