Starting assistance and charging the 12 V on-
board electrical system battery
Have starting assistance provided only by a
#
qualified specialist workshop, e.g. an author-
ized Mercedes-Benz Center.
Have the 12 V on-board electrical system bat-
#
tery charged only at a qualified specialist work-
shop, e.g. an authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter.
Replacing the 12 V on-board electrical system bat-
tery
Only have the 12 V on-board electrical system
#
battery replaced at a qualified specialist work-
shop, e.g. an authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen-
ter.
12‑V‑auxiliary battery under the front passenger
seat or in the engine compartment
Only have work on the 12 V auxiliary battery
#
carried out at a qualified specialist workshop,
e.g. in a authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Towing or tow-starting

Permitted towing methods
In the event of a breakdown, Mercedes-Benz rec-
ommends that you have the vehicle transported
instead of towed.
Use a tow rope or a tow bar when towing with both
axles on the ground; other towing methods are not
permissible.
If you notice that the vehicle has lost coolant, tow-
ing it away is not permitted. Have the vehicle
transported.

& WARNING Risk of accident due to limited
safety-related functions during the towing
process
Safety-related functions are limited or no lon-
ger available in the following situations:
The vehicle is switched off.
R
The brake system or power steering system
R
is malfunctioning.
The energy supply or the on-board electri-
R
cal system is malfunctioning.
When your vehicle is towed away, significantly
more effort may be required to steer and brake
than is normally required.
Use a tow bar.

Make sure that the steering wheel can
#
move freely before towing the vehicle
away.
* NOTE Damage to the vehicle due to towing
away incorrectly
Observe the instructions and notes on
#
towing away.
* NOTE Damage due to automatic braking
When Active Brake Assist or the HOLD function
is activated, the vehicle brakes automatically in
certain situations.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivate
these systems in the following or similar situa-
tions:
When towing

In a car wash
#
* NOTE Damage to drive system due to
incorrect maneuvering
If the vehicle is moved rearwards when the
drive system has failed, e. g. when pushing or
maneuvering, the drive system can be dam-
aged.
Move the vehicle rearwards only briefly
#
and slowly.
