Optimizing Outdoor Point-to-Point Antenna Placement

Optimizing Outdoor Point-to-Point Antenna Placement
If an AP is connected to an outdoor directional antenna, the antenna must be pointed directly at
the antenna for the other AP. A misaligned antenna can decrease the signal level or prevent
communications. Aligning an omni-directional antenna is less critical due to its wide radiation
pattern. For optimal performance, make sure the antennas are properly aligned by using a pair of
binoculars to point the antennas at each other.

AP3660 Antenna Alignment Using Internal Buzzer

The AP3660 includes an audible buzzer used when aligning an antenna with a remote AP. The
volume of the buzzer changes based on the received signal strength (RSS) related to the antenna
alignment. The sound is a beep followed by a pause, where the cycle is shorter for stronger signal
strength and longer for weaker signals. The pause ranges from 0.04 seconds (strongest signal
strength) to 1 second (weakest signal strength).
The buzzer is enabled when the AP3660 LED mode is set to "WDS Signal Strength" in the
Enterasys Wireless Assistant software.
To change the AP3660 LED mode:
1.
From the main menu, click Wireless AP Configuration. The Enterasys Wireless AP screen
displays.
2.
In the Wireless APs list, select the AP3660 from the list of APs. The AP Properties tab displays
Wireless AP information.
3.
In the AP Properties dialog, click Advanced. The Advanced dialog displays.
4.
In the LED drop-down list, select WDS Signal Strength, and click Close.
5.
To save your changes, click Save.
The buzzer pause is set to 50% duty cycle and the frequency of the buzzer pulse is exponential to
the RSS as shown in
from -65dbm to -70dbm, buzzer frequency is 4 pulses per second and each pulse is 0.12 seconds.
