Remove Crankshaft Position Sensor
NOTE: Do not remove sensor from bracket unless
sensor is being replaced.
1. Remove two bracket mounting screws and
crankshaft position sensor from crankcase mounting
posts. Keep leads in place and let bracket and
crankshaft position sensor lay on backing shroud.
2. Unplug connector from rectifi er-regulator. Remove
wiring harness ground lead from rectifi er-regulator
mounting screw (outside edge). Rectifi er-regulator
does not need to be removed from backing shroud.
3. If equipped, remove lead from engine temperature
sensor (in oil pan). Remove switch from oil pan only
if replacing.
4. Remove screws securing harness bracket and
ground leads to #1 cylinder bosses.
5. Remove other end of ground lead from #1 cylinder
boss screw. Be sure to keep washer.
Remove Debris Screen (Style A)
NOTE: If fan is not being replaced, hex studs can
remain installed securing fan to fl ywheel.
Remove screws and special washers securing debris
screen to studs in fl ywheel; then remove stiff ener. Hex
studs and cooling fan can stay attached to fl ywheel.
Remove Debris Screen (Style B) and Fan
NOTE: If fan and debris screen are not being replaced,
screws can be loosened and screen and fan can
be lifted off fl ywheel.
1. Loosen screws securing screen and fan to fl ywheel.
2. Hold screen and fan together. Carefully separate
fan/screen assembly from face of fl ywheel.
It is important to retain fan and screen together as a
complete assembly. This will allow spacers and
spring washers to stay in place.
3. Once assembly is removed from fl ywheel,carefully
set aside.

Disassembly/Inspection and Service
Remove Flywheel/Fan/Hex Stud Assembly
NOTE: Always use a fl ywheel strap wrench or holding
tool to hold fl ywheel when loosening or
tightening fl ywheel screw. Do not use any type
of bar or wedge to hold fl ywheel. Use of such
tools could cause fl ywheel to become cracked or
damaged.
NOTE: Always use a fl ywheel puller to remove fl ywheel
from crankshaft. Do not strike crankshaft or
fl ywheel, as these parts could become cracked
or damaged.
NOTE: High output charging system fl ywheel (identifi ed
by 4 large cooling holes) has very strong
magnets. Magnet assembly guard on interior of
this fl ywheel has a thin, sharp edge. Wear
protective gloves when handling this fl ywheel.
1. Use a fl ywheel strap wrench or holding tool to hold
fl ywheel and loosen screw securing fl ywheel to
crankshaft.
2. Remove screw and washer.
3. Use a puller to remove fl ywheel from crankshaft.
ETB ECV EFI engines with high output charging
system have a fl ywheel with very strong magnets.
Wear protective gloves and use a fl ywheel puller to
remove this fl ywheel.
4. Remove woodruff key from crankshaft.
Inspection
Inspect fl ywheel for cracks and fl ywheel keyway for
damage. Replace fl ywheel if it is cracked. Replace
fl ywheel, crankshaft, and key if fl ywheel key is sheared
or keyway is damaged.
Inspect ring gear for cracks or damage. Kohler does not
provide ring gear as a serviceable part. Replace fl ywheel
if ring gear is damaged.
