Error Symptoms
NOTE: To diagnose a problem, first find the error symptom in the left
column. If directed to a check procedure, replace the FRU indicated in the
check procedure. If no check procedure is indicated, the first Action/FRU
listed in right column is the most likely cause.
Hard disk drive LED fails to
light, but system operates
normally.
NOTE: Make sure CD-ROM drive is configured correctly in BIOS Setup,
cable/jumper are set correctly and its laser beam is clean before diagnosing
any CD-ROM drive problems.
CD-ROM drive LED flashes for
more than 30 seconds
before LED shutting off.
Software asks to reinstall disc.
Software displays a reading
CD error.
CD-ROM drive LED doesn't
come on but works normally.
CD-ROM drive cannot load or
eject when the system is
turned on and its eject
button is pressed and held.
CD-ROM drive does not read
and there are no error codes
or messages are displayed.

With the system power on, measure the
voltage of hard disk LED connector JP7 (See
"Machine Type 2156 System Board Layout"
on page 5-3). Its reading should be:
CN9
HDD Idle/Active

0 Vdc / 0 Vdc

+5 Vdc / +5 Vdc
Hard drive LED cable.
CD-ROM Drive
CD may have dirt or foreign material on it.
Check with a known good disc.
CD is not inserted properly.
CD is damaged.
CD-ROM drive
