5. System Board Interconnects
System boards within the system include the midplane, bridge board, hot-swap backplane, and
control panel. This chapter describes the interconnect features of each and defines the pin-outs
for each connector. Later chapters describe functional details of each system board.
5.1

Active SAS Midplane

The midplane is designed around a PMC8388 24-port SAS expander.
The midplane provides SAS connectivity between any attached SAS host adapter and the 12
3.5-inch SAS/SATA hard disk drives located in the front of the enclosure.
The SAS connector to SAS host adapter is through an industry standard MiniSAS connector as
defined in SFF-8087.
In addition to providing SAS connectivity, the I/O module also supports in-band SES
communications allowing the attached HBA and its associated management application to
manage the attached storage
The following figure shows the location for each connector found on the active SAS midplane
board.
