Some of the terms you will come across frequently in this manual are
defined here.
add-on card
- This card connects through expansion slots to the
motherboard. Also known as an adapter, expansion, or
interface card, this is used to increase the capabilities of
your computer.
address
- A value given to specific memory locations so that data
can be read or written is called an address. Make sure
that devices do not have the same address. Otherwise,
there will be an address conflict.
ASCII
- This is an acronym for the American Standard Code for
Information Interchange. ASCII code includes both control
and graphic characters, and is used for exchanging infor-
mation between data-processing systems, data-com-
munication systems and related equipment.
asynchronous communication
- A type of information vehicle whereby data can be trans-
mitted at any time without requiring synchronized timing.
back up (v)
- To make a spare copy of a disk or of a file.
backup (n)
- A copy of a disk or file.
bank
- The area on a printed circuit board for RAM chips is
usually divided into rows. These are called banks.
