Rewind Starter

Condition
Starter rope broken
Starter rope does not rewind
Starter rope cannot be pulled out
far enough
Starter rope can be pulled out
almost without resistance
(crankshaft does not turn)

Starter rope is difficult to pull –
models with ErgoStart

Cause
Rope pulled out too vigorously as
far as stop or over edge, i.e. not
vertically
Normal wear
Rewind spring very dirty or
corroded
Insufficient spring tension
Rewind spring broken
Spring overtensioned
Guide peg on pawl or pawl itself is
worn
Spring clip on pawl fatigued
Spring clip installed wrong
Guide pegs on pawls or pawls
themselves are worn
Torsion springs on flywheel
fatigued, pawls worn or sticking
Lugs on carrier worn
Spring loop in spring housing not
attached to carrier
Spring in spring housing fatigued
Remedy
Fit new starter rope
Fit new starter rope
Clean or replace rewind spring
Check rewind spring and increase
tension
Fit new rewind spring
Check rewind spring and reduce
tension
Fit new pawl
Fit new spring clip
Install spring clip correctly
Fit new pawls
Clean seats on pawls or replace
pawls and torsion springs if
necessary
Install new carrier
Attach spring loop to carrier
Install new spring housing
