Setting Port Priority Levels
As not all Powered Devices (PDs) connect ed t o t he swit ch have t he same priorit y wit hin a net work
set t ing, t he OmniSwit ch allows t he administ rat or t o specif y priorit y levels on a port -by-port basis.
Priorit y levels include low, high, and crit ical.
The def ault priorit y level f or a port is low.
•
Low. This def ault value is used f or port (s) t hat have l ow-priorit y devices at t ached. In t he event of a
power management issue, inline power t o low-priorit y is int errupt ed f irst (i. e. , bef ore crit ical and
high priorit y).

High. This value is used f or port (s) t hat have import ant , but not mission-crit ical, devices at t ached.
If ot her port s in t he chassis have been conf igured as crit ical, inl ine power t o high-priorit y is given
second priorit y.

Critical. This value is used f or port (s) t hat have mi ssion-crit ical devices at t ached, and t heref ore
require t op (i. e. , crit ical) priorit y. In t he event of a power management issue, inline power t o
crit ical is maint ained as long as possible.
To change t he priorit y level f or a part icular port , use t he lanpower priorit y command. Since t he swit ch
all ows you t o set priorit y levels on a port -by-port basis, be sure t o specif y chassis/ slot / port inf ormat ion
in t he command line. For example, t he synt ax
-> lanpower port 1/1/6 priority critical
changes t he priorit y value of port 6 t o t he highest pr iorit y level of crit ical. Now t hat t he def ault value
has been reconf igured, t his port should be reserved f or t hose PDs t hat are mission crit ical f or net work
operat ions.
Setting the Capacitor Detection Method
By def ault , t he capacit or det ect ion met hod is disabled. To enable it , use t he lanpower capacit or-
det ect ion command. For example:
-> lanpower slot 1/1 capacitor-detection enable
Note. The capacit ive det ect ion met hod should only be enabled t o support
legacy IP phones. This f eat ure is not compat ibl e wit h IEEE specif icat ions. Please

t o f ind out which Alcat el-Lucent IP phones models need capacit ive det ect ion
enabled.
Understanding Priority Disconnect
Priorit y disconnect is used by t he syst em sof t ware in det ermining whet her an incoming PD will be
grant ed or denied power when t here are t oo f ew wat t s remaining in t he PoE power budget f or an
addit ional device. For example, if t here are only 2 wat t s available in t he current PoE power budget and
a user plugs a 3. 5W powered device int o a PoE port , t he syst em sof t ware must det ermine whet her t he
device will be powered on.
