Toilets: What to Flush
It is simple: Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down your toilet. That is it.
Do not ever flush
-
Facial tissues
-
Baby wipes, disinfectant wipes, moist wipes, etc. (even when it says "OK" for flushing), because
these items build up in the pipes and cause unsanitary backups.
-
Toilet bowl scrub pads
-
Swiffer wipes
-
Napkins (paper or cloth), paper towels
-
Dental floss
-
Fish or small animals
-
Egg shells, nutshells, and coffee grounds
-
Fats, oils, and greases
-
Contact Lenses
-
Hair
-
Sanitary napkins, tampons, condoms, or any non-organic material
-
Vitamins, medicines, or other pharmaceuticals
-
Sheet plastic, or plastic of any kind
-
Diapers (cloth or disposable, even if they say "flushable")
-
Cat litter (even if it says "flushable", and even it is the tiniest bit of cat litter--this still clumps
and builds up over time)
Again, ANYTHING that is not toilet paper or human waste cannot be flushed!
You may be billed for the cost of a visit by maintenance or a plumber caused by anything
toilet paper or human waste
Heat & Electricity
As per your lease, you are always required to heat your apartment to 55 degrees minimum, even
if you are absent from the premises for any period. This is to prevent the water pipes from freezing
and bursting. Here are some helpful suggestions to lower your heating costs:
-
Buy slightly heavier curtains to hold heat in and close them at night and when you leave your
house.
-
Do not place furniture in front of heat sources: this can block the heat.
-
Get to know your energy-efficient thermostat, which can set specific room temperatures at
specific times. When you move in, you will get a review of the thermostat controls; please
also refer to the printed instructions at the end of this handbook, as well as video
instructions available at asterfields.org/residents under the section "Thermostat
Instructions."
-
Dropping the heat by just 5 degrees and wearing a sweater can increase savings.
WARNING:
Your default electric supplier is National Grid. Beware of signing electricity supply contracts
with any other company. They may offer a sweet deal but read the fine print! Once the original
contract expires, your rates may go up a lot.
