If your printed output appears faded, streaked or scratchy, the printhead may
need to be cleaned or aligned. See the S500 User's Guide on the Setup
Software & User's Guide CD-ROM for additional corrective actions.

1. With the printer on, click
S S t t a a r r t t , then S S e e t t t t i i n n g g s s , then
P P r r i i n n t t e e r r s s .
2. Right-click the C C a a n n o o n n S S 5 5 0 0 0 0
printer icon, then select
P P r r o o p p e e r r t t i i e e s s .
3. Click the M M a a i i n n t t e e n n a a n n c c e e tab,
then click the C C l l e e a a n n i i n n g g
button. The printer will clean
the printhead.
4. Click O O K K to close the window.
5. After the cleaning, print a nozzle check pattern to check the results. See
"Printing a Nozzle Check Pattern" on page 20.
6. If there is no change after cleaning, check the amount of ink remaining. If an
ink tank is empty, replace it. See "Monitoring Ink Levels" on page 19.

1. Make sure the printer is on.
2. In a software application, click F F i i l l e e , then P P a a g g e e S S e e t t u u p p .
3. Click U U t t i i l l i i t t i i e e s s . The Canon S500 Printer Utility window will appear.
4. Click the C C l l e e a a n n i i n n g g button.

Printhead cleaning consumes ink. Avoid unnecessary cleaning.
The Maintenance tab and procedures may vary for Windows NT
4.0 and Windows 2000. Follow the instructions when
prompted.
