    O N E Introduction Using This Manual Thank you for purchasing a Brother Multi-function center (MFC). This machine has been designed to be simple to use, with LCD screen prompts to guide you through functions. However, you can use your machine to its fullest potential by taking a few minutes to read this manual.

    As well as sending and receiving faxes, you can also print, scan and duplicate documents easily and quickly. In addition to the above features, the MFC-9550 can also be used as a scanner, an answering machine with electronic voice messaging and a PC fax that enables you to send faxes straight from your PC.

    I N T R O D U C T I O N Fax Tones and Handshake When someone is sending a fax, the fax machine sends fax calling tones, (CNG tones)—soft, intermittent beeps at 4-second intervals. You’ll hear them when you dial and press Start, and they continue for about 40 seconds after dialling.

    Stop Stops a fax, cancels an operation or exits from function mode. Photo This key is used to copy photographs.     C H A P T E R T W O Choosing a Location Place your machine on a flat, stable surface, such as a desk. Select a place that is free of vibration and shocks. Locate the machine near a telephone wall socket and a standard earthed electrical socket.

    C H A P T E R T W O Setting Up the machine Follow the instructions below to connect the handset (For MFC-9550 only), power cord, and telephone line. Connecting the Handset. (For MFC-9550 only) Connect the curled handset cord to the bottom of the handset and to the left side of the machine.
  • Page 28 IMPORTANT: If you need to remove the moulded mains plug in order to fit an appropriate type, you must discard the moulded plug immediately having cut it off, in order that it is not inadvertently inserted into a live socket, thus presenting a shock hazard.

    Loading Paper Open the Multi-purpose sheet feeder cover. Fan the paper well. Load the paper, making sure that the printing surface is towards the fax unit and the paper level is stacked below the triangle mark. The feeder can hold up to 200 sheets of 80gsm paper, or up to 10 envelopes.

    Multi-Line Connections (PABXs) Most offices use a central telephone system, or PABX. The machine will work with most PABX or key systems that allow a two-wire analogue connection. However, we recommend that you have a separate telephone line for your machine. You can then leave the machine in Fax Only Mode to receive faxes any time of day or night.

    You can display the caller IDs that are stored in the memory and select the caller you want your machine to dial. Call Reply is a convenient feature whereby your Brother fax can dial back a voice/fax call “on- hook” to the opposite party associated with a Caller ID number which has been captured into memory.

    Secure Polling is a way to keep your documents and others’ from falling into the wrong hands while the fax machines are set up for polling. You can use Secure Polling only with another Brother fax machine. Your four-digit ID number must be entered on the fax machine that polls for your documents.

    C H A P T E R S I X Fax Redial If you’re sending a fax manually and the line is busy, you can retry the number by pressing Redial/Pause. Press Redial/Pause. Press Start. (Only for Ireland) If you’re sending a fax automatically and the line is busy, the machine will automatically redial up to 4 times (3 times for Ireland) at 2 minute intervals.

    C H A P T E R S I X Broadcasting Broadcasting is automatically sending the same fax message to multiple fax numbers. Using the Help/Broadcast key, you can include up to 24 One Touch locations, up to 100 Speed Dial locations, and up to 50 manually dialled numbers (maximum of 174 locations if you did not use up any locations for Groups, access codes or credit card numbers).
