Cabinet design and EMC

12.1

General information

High Frequency Drives are intended exclusively for installation in EMC control cabinets and are
designed as built-in units with degree of protection IP20 or IPXXB according to IEC 60529 and as
open type equipment according to UL 50. This ensures that fingers cannot come into contact
with any active components.
To ensure also protection against mechanical stress and climatic conditions, the components
must always be operated in enclosures, cabinets or enclosed electrical operating areas/rooms
that fulfill at least degree of protection IP54 according to European enclosure specifications, or
in compliance with US, Canadian and Mexican regulations as enclosure type 12, according to
NEMA 250.
When operating components in the chassis and booksize formats, the information provided in
these manuals regarding cabinet design and EMC apply:
• SINAMICS S120 Manual for Booksize Power Units
• SINAMICS S120 Manual for Chassis Power Units

Safety instructions for control panel manufacturing

Malfunctions caused by conductive foreign matter
Foreign objects in the enclosure can cause the devices to malfunction. In turn, this affects the
functional safety of machines and can therefore put people in danger or lead to material
damage.
• Cover the ventilation slots during installation of the control cabinet to prevent drill swarf,
• Observe the safety regulations regarding touch protection. See also EN 60204-1.
Electric shock due to unconnected cable shields
Hazardous touch voltages can occur through capacitive cross-coupling due to unconnected
cable shields.
• Connect cable shields and unused conductors of power cables (e.g. brake conductors) at
