Glossary
RJ11: A modular connector used on most U.S. telephone systems and
direct-connect modems. The RJ11 connector is a 6-wire connector.
RJ45: A modular connector used on many network cards. The RJ45 is an
8-wire connector.
root directory: The directory on a disk at the "top" of the directory
structure. All subdirectories on the disk connect directly or
indirectly to the root directory.
RS232-C: The Electronic Industries Association (EIA) interface standard
for asynchronous communication. It defines control, data and status
signals for cables connecting computers with printers and other
peripheral devices.

select: To highlight text or display handles around graphics.
serial: The handling of data bits one after the other.
serial communications: A communications technique that uses as few as
two interconnecting wires to send bits one after another.
serial interface: An interface between systems or system components in
which information is transmitted sequentially, one bit at a time. The
transmitted bits are reassembled, at the receiving component.
serial port: A communications port (COM1 or COM2) to which you can
connect a serial device, such as a modem, a mouse or a serial printer.
serial input/output (SIO): The electronic method of serial data
transmission.
session: The time during which a program is running. For example, an
MS-DOS session under Windows is the time during which you
execute MS-DOS commands or run an MS-DOS program.
shortcut: 1) A feature of Windows 95/98 and Windows NT that allows
you to use an icon to open folders and documents and their
associated programs, to start programs directly or to move from
folder to folder. 2) A keyboard shortcut.
SIMM: Single Inline Memory Module. A unit of RAM used for memory
expansion.
soft keys: Key combinations that emulate keys on the IBM keyboard,
change some configuration options, stop program execution, and
access the numeric keypad overlay.
