motherboard: The main printed circuit board in the computer. It contains
the processor chip, memory and other major system components.
Sometimes called the main board.
multimedia: A combination of two or more elements, such as sound,
animation and video in a computer program or presentation.
Multimedia programs, which require huge amounts of storage
space, have become very popular with the wide availability of
CD-ROM drives.
multitasking: A technique in which the computer runs one program for a
short time and then switches to the next program. Because people's
sense of time is much slower than the computer's speed, the
programs seem to run simultaneously.

network: A collection of interconnected, individually controlled
computers, together with the hardware and software used to connect
them. A network allows you to share data and peripheral devices,
such as printers, with other users and to exchange electronic mail.
non-interlaced: A method of refreshing a computer screen, in which
each pixel of every line is refreshed as the electron beam scans
across and down the screen.
non-system disk: A disk for storing programs and data that cannot be
used to start the computer. See system disk.
non-volatile memory: Memory that retains data in the absence of an
external power source.
numeric keypad overlay: A feature that allows you to use certain keys on
the keyboard to enter numbers and to control cursor movement.

off line: Not currently connected to or under the control of the computer.
Used to refer to equipment such as disk drives and printers.
on line: A functional state of a peripheral in which it is ready to receive or
transmit data.
online: Available through the computer. Online may refer to information
on the hard disk, such as online documentation or online help, or a
connection, through a modem, to another computer.
