RS-485 always requires at least three or five conductors: 2 or 4 signal wires and 1
signal return path. (+1 wire ground)
2.1.3.3
Connecting a 2-wire network to 4-wire devices (and inversely)
There is compatibility between the 2 and 4-wire RS-485 devices.
In this case only the Half-Duplex communication mode can be used at all connected
devices.
2.1.3.4
RS-485 terminations
Although it is suggested to use 120 Ohm resistors to terminate the network at its two
ends against reflection, at 9600 baud with local cables it doesn't have any significance.
The termination is optional.
