Reverse System Diagnostics (Cont.)
Problem
Reverse system inoperative.
"R" not indicated on display.
Engine starter inoperative*
*NOTE: If the 25A fuse is blown, the
engine starter motor will not operate
even if the reverse lever is in the
forward (down) position.
"R" Displayed too early or too late in
reverse lever travel range
Engine kills when transmission shifted
into gear.
Difficulty moving lever into or out of
Reverse position
Switch mounted
in reverse gear case
Connected to reverse harness

REVERSE SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING
Possible Cause / Remedy
Reverse switch contacts closed.
Check reverse switch function and
linkage adjustment.
25A fuse open (blown). Replace fuse
and determine cause.
Poor wiring connection. Verify all
wiring is connected and clean.
Reverse lever in "Reverse" position
(UP). Move lever to forward (DOWN)
position.*
25A fuse open (blown). Replace fuse.
Determine cause of failure.
Poor wiring connection. Verify all
wiring is connected and clean.
Reverse linkage adjustment incorrect.
Reverse switch malfunction or switch
mounting bracket bent.
Reverse switch contacts open (no
ground on Pin C at module). Reverse
lever in Reverse position or linkage
adjustment incorrect.
Reverse gear idler shaft dirty.
Lubricate shaft at every oil change.

Move lever back to the Forward
position (down) or adjust shift
linkage.
Lubricate idler shaft.
Reverse Switch Inspection
1. Disconnect switch (under left side cover).
No continuity
2. Connect one lead of Ohmmeter to switch
wire and the other to engine ground.
3. Place Reverse lever in forward (Down).
4. Resistance should be less than 1 Ohm
to ground (good continuity).
5. Slowly lift reverse lever while observing
the Ohmmeter reading. Lever must move
at least 6mm (1/4 inch) and no more than
12mm (1/2 inch) before the switch opens
(no continuity).
6. If switch opens and closes out of the range
above, adjust linkage rod (Chapter 11).
Replace switch if always grounded or open.
